Top Dem Criticizes House GOP for Failing to Back Capitol Police

October 10, 2025

Rochester, New York Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25), the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, issued this statement on House Republicans’ shutdown and the impact on the brave men and women of the U.S. Capitol Police:

“Speaker Johnson and House Republicans don’t stand with the Capitol Police, they exploit them. If they truly cared, they wouldn’t have defended pardoning the violent felons who assaulted them, blocked a plaque honoring them, created a subcommittee to disparage them, or released sensitive security footage endangering them. If they cared, they would have joined me earlier this year to increase their pay, and never shut down the government in the first place.”

Earlier this week Ranking Member Morelle condemned the Trump Administration’s attempts to withhold back pay from federal employees, including the Capitol Police.

In April, Ranking Member Morelle demanded the Director of the National Finance Center immediately reverse an unnecessary halt on a modest pay raise for U.S. Capitol Police officers.
