WASHINGTON, DC – Committee on House Administration Chairperson Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) introduced legislation today to combat foreign interference in American elections. H.R. 4617, the Stopping Harmful Interference in Elections for a Lasting Democracy (SHIELD) Act will close loopholes that allow foreign spending in our elections, boost disclosure and transparency requirements, and create a duty to report illicit offers of campaign assistance from foreign nations or governments.
Chairperson Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) delivered the following opening remarks today during a Committee hearing on "Oversight of the Renovations of the Cannon House Office Building:"
"Good morning everyone, the Committee will come to order.
"We welcome you to this hearing, which will provide oversight on the renovations to the Cannon House Office Building.
House Democrats have introduced H.R. 1, the For the People Act in the 117th Congress!
- H.R. 1 is a sweeping package of pro-democracy and anticorruption reforms to put power back in the hands of the American people by ending the dominance of big money in politics; making it easier, not harder, to vote; and ensuring that politicians actually serve the public interest.

This bill addresses election security through grant programs and requirements for voting systems and paper ballots.
