Top Democrat Issues Statement on Speaker Johnson’s Refusal to Commit to Peaceful Transfer of Power

September 24, 2024

WASHINGTON — Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25), the top Democrat of the Committee on House Administration, issued the following statement after Speaker Mike Johnson refused to unconditionally commit to certifying the 2024 election results and continued his ongoing attempts to discredit the 2024 election:

“Speaker Mike Johnson’s refusal to commit to a peaceful transfer of power and to certifying the 2024 election continues his pattern of election denialism. There is no reason to believe that the 2024 election will not be secure. Speaker Johnson knows that our elections are free, fair, and safe – but that will not stop him from setting the stage to try to steal the election from the American people.”

Speaker Johnson’s pattern of election denialism dates back to his attempt to overturn the 2020 election, which former President Trump’s Department of Homeland Security deemed “the most secure in American history.” During his press conference, Speaker Johnson said he would “follow the Constitution” as it relates to certifying the 2024 election results only “if we have a free, fair, and safe election.”

Yesterday, Rep. Morelle called out Speaker Johnson for his repeated election-related lies and attempts to disenfranchise our U.S. military voters.

Earlier this month, the Committee on House Administration heard from several Secretaries of State that the 2024 election is safe. Speaker Johnson’s continued election-related lies, mis- and dis-information threatens our democracy and destroys voters’ confidence in our elections.
