Ranking Member Joe Morelle Issues Statement on Speaker Johnson’s Repeated Attempts to Discredit Election and Disenfranchise Military Voters

September 23, 2024

WASHINGTON — Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25), the top Democrat of the Committee on House Administration, issued the following statement after Speaker Mike Johnson continued his ongoing attempts to discredit the 2024 election and complicate the elections process for servicemembers. Speaker Johnson abruptly removed a previously scheduled House vote after he used his official social media account on X, formerly known as Twitter, to spread the Big Lie, decrease confidence in our secure elections, and amplify a candidate’s campaign account.

“Earlier today, Speaker Johnson reposted lies about military and overseas voters authored by former President Trump. These claims continue a troubling pattern by former President Trump and Speaker Johnson, and are intended to set the stage to contest the outcome of this election.

“Last week, the Speaker tried to disenfranchise servicemembers by adding the SAVE Act to a critical federal funding bill. Now, the VOTES Act has mysteriously been removed from the schedule, despite its aim to help America’s servicemembers vote while serving and protecting us abroad.

“By aligning himself with former President Trump and his attacks on military voters, Speaker Johnson proves once again that his only desire is to puppet Trump, and protect power, not democracy.”
