Ranking Member Morelle Urges Speaker Johnson to Enforce Rules of Decorum
Washington, D.C. – Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) issued the following statement after sending Speaker Johnson a letter on his failure to enforce House floor decorum rules during the President’s State of the Union address:
“Last night, President Biden gave an optimistic and clear-eyed State of the Union address about where our nation is headed, emphasizing our shared American democratic values as our North Star.
“Unfortunately, it was met with a complete lack of decorum, and frankly, disrespect, by my colleagues on the other side of the aisle. I implore Speaker Johnson to get his conference under control and educate his members on proper decorum, particularly while the President is performing his constitutional duty to deliver the State of the Union.
“As Speaker of the House, it is Mr. Johnson’s duty to ensure decorum in the House of Representatives. The impertinent and juvenile behavior by my Republican colleagues is embarrassing and the most recent example of House Republican Majority’s dysfunction and inability to govern.”
