Ranking Member Morelle Leads 110+ Dems in Continued Push to Repeal Senate’s Self-Enrichment Provision

November 21, 2025

WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25), the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, led 116 House Democrats in demanding Senate Majority Leader John Thune immediately take up H.R. 6019 – legislation that would repeal the corrupt self-enrichment provision Senate Republicans snuck into the government funding bill.

Under current law, millions of taxpayer dollars could be paid to eight Republican Senators whose phone records were reviewed as part of a lawful investigation into President Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election—including the violent and deadly January 6, 2021, attack on The Capitol.

“If you believe the law provides inadequate protections for Americans’ civil liberties, then you are well-positioned to convene hearings, draft legislation, propose changes to the law, and debate them publicly. Instead, you chose to carve out special protections for eight of your Republican colleagues,” wrote the Members. “This is a textbook example of why Americans’ confidence in government continues to erode.”

Today’s letter follows Ranking Member Morelle’s fight on the House floor as he led debate for House Democrats on H.R. 6019. The bill passed the House unanimously, 426-0.

“Adding this provision to what was supposedly a 'clean' funding bill was wrong. Rarely in life do we get a second chance to do the right thing. The House has now given you such an opportunity. We urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to take it,” concludes the letter.
