Top House Democrat Calls on FCC, FEC to Tighten Political Communications and Campaign Ad Monitoring Amid Iranian U.S. Elections Influence Campaign
"AI used in content related to political campaigns must be continuously monitored for use by bad actors."
WASHINGTON – Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25), the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, issued this statement calling on the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to strengthen how they monitor AI, and its generated content specifically related to U.S. elections, following an announcement from OpenAI about the interception of a covert Iranian influence operation using ChatGPT that generated website and social media content focused on the 2024 presidential campaign.
“The American people deserve to hear directly from our presidential nominees without the influence of mis-and dis-information during the election process. I call on the FEC and FCC to strengthen their policies and best practices for this election, and those in our future, to ensure that foreign influences do not penetrate our nation’s elections. Given the increased use of generative AI and large language models, as well as the new technologies and tools that emerge frequently – AI used in content related to political campaigns must be continuously monitored for use by bad actors. I am deeply concerned about recent attempts by Iran to influence the 2024 presidential election. I will continue to work with my colleagues at every level to ensure our elections remain secure and safe, Americans continue to have full faith in the democratic process, and that every eligible ballot is counted this November. We must work together to ensure our elections remain fair and free of foreign influence.”
