Top Dem Issues Statement on New Staff Report about the Federal Election Commission

May 15, 2025

WASHINGTON – Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25), the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, issued this statement about a new Committee staff report examining the critical need for Federal Election Commission (FEC) reforms to ensure fairness and transparency in American elections and to amplify the voices of American voters over the wealthy and well-connected:

“The harm wrought by the Citizens United decision is staggering. Compounding this harm, however, has been the lack of meaningful oversight by the FEC. Fifty years after its founding, the FEC needs bold reforms to fulfill its critical mission of protecting the health of our democracy.”

The staff report entitled, “The Federal Election Commission at 50: The Deregulators are Winning” provides readers with:

  • a detailed history of the FEC and American campaign finance regulation;
  • specific case studies demonstrating the broken nature of the FEC’s current enforcement processes; and
  • proposals for some reforms to the FEC that could restore the Commission to its original purpose and make the future of American elections cleaner, fairer, and more transparent.
