Ranking Members Joe Morelle, Jared Huffman Demand Trump Administration Preserve Records of Its Voter Surveillance Machine

October 30, 2026

Letters detail how the administration funneled citizenship checks, Social Security and passport data, and access to 29,000 federal websites through one White House–controlled portal weeks before the midterms

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Reps. Joe Morelle (NY-25), Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, and Jared Huffman (CA-02), Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee, demanded that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of State, Social Security Administration (SSA), General Services Administration (GSA), Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and the White House National Design Studio (NDS) immediately preserve, and turn over to Congress, records on how the Trump administration is using Login.gov and America.gov to conduct mass surveillance on Americans and build the machinery to purge eligible voters ahead of the midterm elections.

“On September 8th,” the Members wrote, “we asked the Government Accountability Office to investigate how the Trump administration abused America’s 250th birthday budget to enrich the President, surveil millions of Americans, and funnel voter data to GOP campaign vendors. On September 29th, the administration revealed that it has since built the infrastructure to do far more harm.”

At President Trump’s direction, DHS has turned Americans’ Social Security, immigration, and passport records into an attack on state voter rolls. DHS strong-armed states into running their voter lists through an error-prone citizenship checker that routinely flags thousands of citizens eligible to vote. This data was then used to feed Trump’s false claims of mass noncitizen voting. Now, DHS is handing states federal “citizenship lists” and urging them to “scrub” their rolls, with every door into the system running through Login.gov.

Then, on September 29, President Trump signed an executive order making Login.govthe front door to America.gov, a single portal to 29,000 federal websites. He ordered agencies to hand Americans’ data to GSA and the White House budget office. At America.gov’s launch, President Trump said the site means “nobody can any longer complain about providing proof of citizenship or voter ID,” and again called for enactment of the SAVE America Act that he has vowed to impose “whether approved by Congress or not.”

“Our elections belong to the American people, not to any administration. But time to ensure the integrity of our democracy is running short,” the Members continued.

All the evidence of this illegal purging will disappear. America.gov’s own privacy policy states that key records from the portal’s launch will be destroyed before the new Congress convenes on January 3, 2027.

The Ranking Members demanded that each agency halt any scheduled deletion and preserve all records on the system, including logs, data-sharing agreements, and communications with DOGE, NDS, and the White House. From DHS, they also demanded state-by-state counts of voters run through SAVE, flagged as potential noncitizens, and later confirmed to be citizens, along with a list of every official granted access to the citizenship lists portal.
