Ranking Member Morelle on the Three-Year Anniversary of the January 6, 2021 Attack
Washington, D.C. – Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) issued the following statement on the three-year anniversary of January 6, 2021:
“Three years ago today, we almost lost our American democracy to a violent and bloody insurrection fueled by the former President’s Big Lie about the 2020 election. The former President conspired with his lawyers and advisors to engage in a variety of schemes to overturn the election, culminating on January 6 when he incited an insurrection and attack on our Capitol Building.
“Since then, the former President has been charged with 91 felonies – 17 of those are directly related to the attempt to overturn the 2020 election.
“More than 150 law enforcement officers were seriously injured and attacked, and five officers lost their lives protecting our democracy: Officer Brian Sicknick, Officer Gunther Hashida, Officer Howard Liebengood, Officer Jeffrey Smith, and Officer Kyle DeFreytag. Our thoughts are with their families, friends, and loved ones today.
“Our democratic process itself was attacked, the cornerstone of our democracy – the peaceful transfer of power – was almost destroyed. Instead of working with their colleagues to strengthen our institution with legislative guardrails, extreme MAGA Republicans have continued to support the Big Lie and the fake elector scheme, politicized our Capitol security by releasing January 6 security footage to extreme MAGA media outlets, and jeopardized the safety of their colleagues, staff, visitors, and our country by posting sensitive security footage on the right-wing video site Rumble.
“Today, we remember to continue the fight to safeguard and strengthen our democracy. I will continue to push back on Republican efforts to undercut the hard work of those charged with keeping us safe and compromise America’s security and democracy.”
