Ranking Member Morelle Statement on President Trump’s Continued Assault on American Democracy
WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25), the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, released the following statement after President Trump issued an executive order that would damage American democracy and restrict access to the ballot box:
“Today’s executive order furthers President Trump’s assault on American democracy. The President demonstrates, again, his feeble understanding of the law; the order is both unlawful and unnecessary. Its directives to the Election Assistance Commission—which Congress established as a bipartisan independent agency outside of presidential control—are especially concerning. So too is President Trump’s decision to allow Elon Musk unfettered access to Americans’ personal voter information. This executive order is not just misguided—it is immoral and illegal.
“President Trump does not care about election integrity. He refused to accept his loss in the 2020 election and incited a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol. He should not lecture the American people on the sanctity of our elections.”
