Ranking Member Morelle on Speaker Johnson and Republicans’ Election Denier Bill

May 8, 2024

Washington, D.C. – Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) issued the following statement on Speaker Johnson and fellow MAGA Republicans’ election denier bill:

“Today, and every day since the January 6th insurrection, extreme MAGA Republicans continue to irresponsibly sow doubt in the minds of voters about the safety of our elections, and they never tire of embracing the former President's election lies.

Non-citizen voting in federal elections is already a federal crime. States already have several systems in place to deter non-citizen voting and people who violate the law face prison time and deportation. This messaging bill attempts to solve a non-existent problem – Speaker Johnson even admitted at his press conference that there is absolutely no evidence that non-citizens are voting in federal elections.

“As Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, which has oversight over federal elections, I will not stand for election lies, fraud, and disinformation. At his press conference today, Speaker Johnson, himself a principal architect of the effort to overturn the 2020 election, was joined by election deniers and white nationalists – the most anti-American cast of characters talking about the cornerstone of our democracy.

“The American people deserve better for our democracy. I will continue to fight for the right to vote, equitable access to the ballot, and to protect our American democracy from wannabe autocrats.”
