Ranking Member Morelle on Speaker Johnson and Former President Trump’s Conspiracy Theories on Election Security
Washington, D.C. – Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) issued the following statement on Speaker Johnson and former President Trump’s continued attempts to falsely undermine the integrity of our elections:
“Extreme MAGA Republicans continue to sow doubt in the minds of voters about the safety of our elections, and they never tire of embracing the former president's election lies. That Speaker Johnson believes Donald Trump—a man facing felony charges for his attempts to overturn a free and fair American election—is a good faith actor when it comes to safeguarding our democracy is an indictment of the Speaker's judgement and credibility.
“Non-citizen voting in federal elections is already a federal crime. This simple fact should not need to be explained to a Speaker of the House or a former President, but the past four years have shown that the basics of American democracy escape them both.
“As Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, which has federal oversight of elections, I will not take a lecture from a former President whose attempts to overturn an American election incited a deadly insurrection.
“The American people deserve better for our democracy. I will continue to fight for the right to vote, equitable access to the ballot, and to protect our American democracy from wannabe autocrats.”
