Ranking Member Morelle Issues Statement Following the SAVE Act Floor Vote

July 10, 2024

“The SAVE Act—and all the untruthful rhetoric around it—is part of the same project that election deniers began in 2020. They are continuing the collective delusion by claiming that noncitizens are voting in federal elections.”

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25), the top Democrat of the Committee on House Administration, issued the following statement after House Republicans passed their extreme elections bill that would make it exceedingly difficult for eligible American citizens to exercise their right to vote.

“Members of Congress are obligated— duty bound— to defend the Republic; not disfigure it. Today, my Republican colleagues prioritized disrupting and destroying Americans’ confidence in our safe and secure elections.

“Let me be crystal clear— it is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections. The time it took to move this legislation through the congressional process should have been spent solving problems that actually exist. For some Americans— and especially Americans of color— voting has been burdensome for far too long. I recently highlighted some of these obstacles in my report on voting barriers Native Americans face.

“Republicans have one objective here and that is to destroy faith in our democracy. Their goal is to scare Americans into believing that non-citizens are going to steal an election when they can’t even vote. If enacted, the SAVE Act will disenfranchise millions of American citizens.

“When the history books reflect on the present day, it will be clear who fought for democracy. In a country where no person— especially a president— should be above the law, and we the people are empowered to democratically elect fellow citizens to office, House Republicans have clearly chosen to continue lying about our nation’s core identity— our democracy, our elections.”
