Ranking Member Morelle, Congressman Kildee, and Congresswoman Dingell Call for Action on Regulating AI in Elections
Washington, D.C. – Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) with colleagues Congressman Dan Kildee (D-M.I.) and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-M.I.) issued the following statement on the need for regulating AI use in our nation’s elections and campaign communications after a GOP candidate in Michigan released a campaign video with an AI generated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. voice claiming the GOP candidate as the district’s “next congressman”:
“This disturbing use of AI is just the latest in Republican efforts to undermine the integrity of our elections—and further evidence of what will be a disinformation-riddled campaign year unless we take immediate action,” said Ranking Member Morelle. “It is why I have introduced legislation requiring disclaimers for political ads that substantially utilize AI, so voters can make informed decisions about the validity of what they are seeing and hearing.”
“Campaign advertisements with AI-generated content should at a minimum have a disclaimer so voters can make informed decisions about their vote,” said Congressman Kildee. “Congress must act to address the risks that artificial intelligence poses to our democracy and ensure commonsense guardrails are in place for the use of AI in our elections.”
“As we work to defend our democracy against the dangerous and growing spread of disinformation, we must keep up with rapidly emerging and evolving technologies including AI,” said Congresswoman Dingell. “It’s disturbing and wrong that anyone would use this technology to fabricate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s voice to further their political agenda and intentionally mislead voters. We must address this threat quickly to protect the integrity of our elections and ensure this does not continue to happen.”
