Ranking Member Morelle Calls on Architect of the Capitol Blanton to Resign

February 9, 2023

“The Architect of the Capitol is responsible for operations and facility management across the Capitol Complex, and, as a member of the Capitol Police Board, plays an integral role in Capitol Complex security. In October 2022, the nonpartisan Architect of the Capitol Office of Inspector General issued a nearly 800-page report alleging Architect of the Capitol J. Brett Blanton abused his authority, misused his official government vehicle, impersonated a law enforcement officer, and committed a variety of other legal, ethical, and administrative violations. In the approximately three months since the report was issued, Mr. Blanton failed to address or even acknowledge the serious and detailed allegations levied by the Inspector General.

“This morning, the Committee on House Administration held an oversight hearing and offered Mr. Blanton the opportunity to respond directly to the allegations. He provided no meaningful or credible defense. Instead, he chose to be vague and evasive, and attempted to place blame on others.

“Based on the conduct alleged by the Inspector General and today’s testimony, I am no longer confident in Mr. Blanton’s ability to effectively perform the duties of his office. He must resign immediately.”
