Ranking Member Morelle on the Anniversary of the Citizens United Decision

January 21, 2024

Washington, D.C. – Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) issued the following statement on the anniversary of the Citizens United v. FEC decision:

“My first statement as Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration noted the devastating impact of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. FEC decision. As a result of Citizens United, megadonors and corporations can flood our elections with unlimited and unrestricted money.

“This decision allows wealthy and well-connected special interests to drown out the voices of everyday American voters. The foundation of our democracy – access to the ballot, the ability to run for office, our ability to hold our government accountable – have all been undermined by Citizens United. Quite simply, the decision was pro-dark money and anti-transparency.

“In July 2023, I was proud to co-sponsor the Freedom to Vote Act with my distinguished colleagues to strengthen and protect our democracy. The Freedom to Vote Act would shine a light on the flood of dark money in our elections, strengthening accountability while returning power to American voters.

“I am honored to continue the fight to protect the sanctity of our elections as Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration. Together, we will strengthen our democracy and ensure access to the ballot for every eligible American.”
