Ranking Member Morelle and Rep. Latimer Introduce Poll Worker Tax Cut Act
WASHINGTON – Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25), the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, and Rep. George Latimer (NY-16) introduced the Poll Worker Tax Cut Act, which would exempt all pay received by poll workers from federal income taxes.
“Cutting taxes for poll workers recognizes their vital role in safeguarding American elections,” said Ranking Member Morelle. “The Poll Worker Tax Cut Act will ease financial burdens while encouraging participation, strengthening election integrity, and ensuring these civil servants are properly valued for their effort, dedication, and patriotism”
“Poll workers are critical to the administration of our elections, working to keep our voting processes efficient and secure,” said Congressman Latimer. “I am proud to join Ranking Member Morelle in introducing this bill to incentivize the training and retention of these underappreciated public servants who work long hours to keep our elections running. I look forward to working with all my colleagues to pass this commonsense bill.”
The Poll Worker Tax Cut Act is co-sponsored by all Committee Democrats – Congresswomen Terri A. Sewell, Norma J. Torres, and Julie Johnson. Representatives Nikema Williams and Kevin Mullin are also co-sponsors. The legislation is also supported by Responsive Gov Action. Sam Oliker-Friedland, CEO of Responsive Gov Action, issued the following statement in support:
“Poll worker shortages have been a persistent issue that impacts communities across America -- large and small, urban and rural, and without regard to party or ideology. I want to thank Reps. Morelle and Latimer for introducing the Poll Worker Tax Cut Act, one humble step that the federal government can take to address this problem and provide more money to these unsung heroes of our elections.”
