Ranking Member Morelle on the 59th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday
Washington, D.C. – Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) issued the following statement commemorating the 59th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday:
“Today we remember those who came before us and paid with their blood, and some their lives, to fight for the right to vote – the bedrock of our American democracy.
“My late colleague, Congressman John Lewis, was one of those foot soldiers who was brutally beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge that day. He carried the fight for voting rights from Bloody Sunday to the halls of Congress, reminding us that the struggle for the right to vote remains vital today. Congress must urgently pass critical voting legislation such as the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act – whose lead sponsor is my dear friend and colleague Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Elections Terri Sewell – and the Freedom to Vote Act to ensure that the sacrifices of so many voting rights champions are not lost to hostile legislatures and regressive courts.”
