Ranking Member Joe Morelle Statement on the Anniversary of Citizens United Decision
Washington, D.C. – Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Joe Morelle (D-NY) issued the following statement on the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. FEC:
“Today marks the anniversary of the disastrous Citizens United decision—when the Supreme Court overturned decades of established precedent, allowing megadonors and corporations to pour unlimited and unrestricted money into our national elections.
“As a result, the voices of the American people have been drowned out by the wealthy and well connected, and our democracy has seen drastic changes in access to voting, running for office, and holding government accountable.
“In the 117th Congress I was proud to co-sponsor and vote to pass H.R.1, the For the People Act. Thislandmark legislation would have reduced the influence of big money in politics by requiring all organizations involved in political activity to disclose their large donors.
“We must continue fighting to protect the sanctity of our elections, and I am honored to advance that goal as the newly-appointed Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration. I look forward to putting the power of our democracy back into the hands of hardworking Americans, increasing transparency and accountability, and ensuring every single voter has their voice heard at the ballot box.”
