Morelle Statement on Increased Security Funding

July 23, 2025

WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25), the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, issued the following statement after securing increased security funding for Members of the House of Representatives:

I’m grateful to Leader Hakeem Jeffries for making safety a top priority. Until now, Members often had to choose between funding security and delivering constituent services. This new path starts to change that. I’m committed to continue working in a bipartisan manner to ensure we maintain this support because safety should never come at the expense of servicing our communities.”

As of August 1, 2025, the following will be available to Members, with the support of the House Sergeant at Arms:

  • Increased Member lifetime allotments under the Residential Security Program to $20,000; and
  • Increased monitoring and maintenance allotment for the remainder of FY2025 to $5,000 per month.
  • This allotment may be used for personal security services.

Background

On June 16, 2025, following the political violence in Minnesota, Ranking Member Morelle and Democratic Leader Jeffries urged Speaker Johnson to “direct the Sergeant at Arms to take all necessary steps to protect House members throughout the country” as credible threats and political violence increased tenfold since 2016.

On June 26, 2025, Ranking Member Morelle and Democratic Leader Jeffries met with Speaker Johnson and Chairman Steil to discuss how to move “quickly, decisively and in a bipartisan manner” to improve the safety and security of all Members and their families.
