Morelle Issues Statement on DOJ Report about Trump’s Corrupt Actions to Overthrow the 2020 Election

January 14, 2025

Rep. Morelle: “The Supreme Court’s landmark ruling provides special treatment that no other American citizen would get.”

WASHINGTON — Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25), the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, issued the following statement after Attorney General Merrick Garland released Jack Smith’s report:

“Jack Smith’s report further details Donald Trump’s corrupt actions to overthrow the 2020 election. The Supreme Court provided him with immunity unavailable to any other American citizen to avoid accountability. I will reintroduce my constitutional amendment because presidents are not monarchs or tyrants, and should not be above the law.”

Background: Last July, Ranking Member Morelle first introduced a constitutional amendment to reverse the Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. United States granting presidents immunity from criminal prosecution. The constitutional amendment had 155 cosponsors in the 118th Congress.
