Ranking Member Morelle: Allen v. Milligan Decision Protects Voting Rights Act
Washington, D.C. — House Administration Committee Ranking Member Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision in Allen v. Milligan:
“This is a monumental victory for Black voters in Alabama and for voting rights broadly in the United States.
“The Supreme Court's decision in Allen v. Milligan makes clear that states cannot draw racially discriminatory legislative maps to dilute the power of non-white voters. Other states that have drawn racially gerrymandered maps should take note of this decision.
“The battle to protect the freedom to vote remains long and difficult, but today brings a ray of hope for millions of Americans who seek full and equal participation in our democratic process. I applaud the work of the civil and voting rights community--especially the Legal Defense Fund--for this victory.
“House Democrats will continue our efforts to advance meaningful democracy reform through the Freedom to Vote Act and to repair the damage previously done to the Voting Rights Act in the Shelby County and Brnovich decisions by fighting to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.”
